Blood On The Tracks session 6, Sound 80 Studio, Minneapolis - 30.dec.1974, album version If you see her, say hello, she might be in Tangiers She left here last early spring, is livin' there, i hear Say for me that i'm all right though things get kind of slow She might think that i've forgotten her, don't tell her it isn't so. We had a fallin' out like lovers often will An' to think of how she left that night, it still brings me a chill An' though our separation it pierced me to the heart She still lives inside of me, we've never been apart. If you get close to her, kiss her once for me I always have respected her for doin' what she did an' gettin' free Oh whatever makes her happy i won't stand in the way Though the bitter taste still lingers on from, the night i tried to make her stay. I see a lot of people as i make the rounds An' i hear her name here an' there as i go from town to town An' i've never got used to it, i've just learned to turn it off Either i'm too sensitive or else i'm gettin soft. Sundown, yellow moon, i replay the past I know every scene by heart they all went by so fast If she's passin back this way i'm not that hard to find Tell her she can look me up if she's got the time. |

We had a fallin' out like lovers often will But to think of how she left that night [it] still brings me a chill An' though our separation it pierced me to the heart She still lives inside of me, we've never been apart. If you're making love to her, kiss her for the kid Who always has respected her for doin' what she did Oh i know it had to be that way, it was written in the cards [Still/But] the bitter taste still lingers on, it all came down so hard. I see a lot of people as i make the rounds An' i hear her name [both] here an' there as i go from town to town An' i've never got used to it, i've just learned to turn it off Either i'm too sensitive or else I'm gettin' soft. Rolling Thunder Revue rehearsals, S.I.R. rehearsals, New York - 21.oct.1975 If you see her, say hello, she might be in Babylon She left here last early spring, took a while to know that she was gone Say for me that iÕm alright, things are kind of in a mess She might wonder where i am by now, if she donÕt know let her guess. We had a fallin' out, like lovers sometimes do And the words that we said to each other that night, still hurt me through and through But i know it had to be that way, it was written in the cards But the bitter taste still lingers on, it all came down so hard. I see a lot of people as i took a ride But i only think her name at night as the sunlight has died An' i've never really swallowed it, iÕve kept it in my mouth As she'll bid hello an' leave up north, most likely iÕll go south. Sundown yellow moon, i replay the past I know every scene by heart, they all went by so fast If she's passin' back this way, most likely iÕll be gone But if sheÕs not, just donÕt let me know, she best keep rovinÕ on. |

alternate re-written version - spring 1976 As on Rolling Thunder Revue 2, April/May 1976, taken from Les Kokay's Songs of the Underground (2003) or Andrew Muir's Troubador (Woodstock Prod., 2003) e.g. Lakeland FL April 18th, 1976 If you see her, say hello, she might be in North Saigon She left here in a hurry, i don't know what she was on You might say that i'm in disarray and for me time's standing still Oh i've never gotten over her, i don't think i ever will. A bright light from me i saw a scattering of souls Just one of those reckless situations which nobody controls Well the menagerie of life goes by right before my eyes We all do the best we can which should come as no surprise. If you're making love to her, watch it from the rear You'll never know when i'll be back or liable to reappear For it's natural to dream of peace as it is for rules to break And right now i've got not much to lose, so you'd better stay away. Sundown, silver moon, hitting on the days My head can't stand no more what my heart don't tolerate Well i know she'll be back someday of that there is no doubt And when that moment comes, lord give me the strength to keep her out. |

Rehearsal for the '78 Tour, Rundown Studios, Santa Monica Ca - january.1978 or april.1978 Rehearsal for the '78 Tour, Rundown Studios, Santa Monica Ca - 30.jan.1978 Two slightly differents lyrics If you see her, say hello, she might be in Tangiers She left here last early spring, she's livin' there, i hear Say for me that I'm alright though things are kind of slow [She might wonder / If she's wondered] what i'm doin' by now, just tell her that you don't know. We had a fallin' out like lovers sometimes do But to think of how [ / that] she left that night, it still hurts me through and through An' though our situation [well / m-m] it hurts me to the bone She's better off with someone else and i'm better off alone. I see a lot of people as i make the rounds And i hear her name here and there as i go from town to town And i've never [just / ] gotten used to it but i've just learned to turn it off Either i'm too sensitive or else I'm [ / just] gettin' soft. Sundown, yellow moon, i replay the past I know every scene by heart, they all went by so fast If she's passin' back this way, most likely [i'll / i will] be gone [But if i'm not just standin' her way, it's the best that she's be gone. / But if i'm not, just let her go, it's best that she stay gone.] |
