Minnesota Party tape 1961, Minneapolis MN - May 1961 She went upstairs to make her bed Not one word to her mother said Her mother seeing her daughter's fears Went upstairs to comfort her. "Oh, daughter, oh daughter, what can it mean? Tell me, what can the matter be?" "Oh, mother, oh mother, I cannot tell That railroad boy that I loved so well Way down in yonder town That's where he goes and sets him down He takes another on his knee And tells to her what he won't tell me." Her father he came home from work Saying "Why's my daughter hurt?" He went upstairs to give her hope Found her hangin' from a rope. He took his knife and cut her down And in her bosom this note was found "Go dig my grave, both wide and deep Put a marble stone at my head and feet And on my breast put a turtle dove To warn this world that I died for love." |

"Oh mother, oh mother I cannot tell It's that railroad boy that i love well He's courted me my life away And now at home I long to stay. There is a place in yonder town Where my love goes and he sits him down And he takes a strange girl on his knee And he tells to her what he won't tell me." Her father he came home from work Saying, "Where's my daughter, she seems so hurt" He went upstairs to give her hope And he found her hanging by a rope. He took his knife and he cut her down And on her bosom these words he found "Go dig my grave both wide and deep Put a marble stone at my head and feet And on my grave put a snow white dove To warn the world i died of love." |
